The challenge was to create a neutral exhibition space within a building with strong existing character. We designed a series of freestanding white volumes within the original rooms, creating a gallery-within-a-palace. The interstitial spaces - between the old walls and the new volumes - become circulation and contemplation areas. The project explores the tension between preservation and intervention.
